Creating and Resizing Content For The New Instagram Grid

Instagram has shifted from the classic 1:1 square format to a 3:4 taller grid preview and a 4:5 ratio for feed content. This change brings a few important details that every content creator needs to know, as it impacts how you create and share content, particularly for feed posts and carousels.

Instagram Sizes You Should Know

Don’t worry about creating content specific to the 3:4 grid. All graphics and photos should be posted to Instagram at the 4:5 ratio, keeping in mind that on the grid, it will appear to trim off both sides (as a preview).

Tips for Creating Your New Content

  • Leave Space Around the Edges: When designing for new posts and reels, leave extra padding around the edges to avoid cropping in the grid preview. Create wording in the center, that way your title is readable no matter how people see your grid layout!

  • Carousel Reminder: Only the first page of a carousel appears in the grid preview. So feel free to use the remaining pages as you wish, but make sure to optimize the first page—the carousel cover—for grid layouts.
